Gabriela Fernandez-Cuervo has mixed feelings about her career choice after finishing her Ph.D. Her entire world at that point revolved around academia, so a postdoc—and eventually, she thought, a faculty position—seemed to be the logical path. “It wasn’t completely obvious for me that the postdoc was what I wanted,” the chemical biologist says. “It just kind of became what was the next step.”
